Idiopathic macular telangiectasia is a vascular anomaly affecting retinal capillaries in the juxtafoveal region.
According to Yannuzzi et al, idiopathic macular telangiectasia is classified into 2 main categories. Type 1 (aneurysmal telangiectasia) is a predominantly unilateral disease affecting mostly men, associated clinically with retinal thickening, prominent extensive telangiectasis, lipid exudates, and cystoid changes, mainly in the temporal part of the macula. Type 2 (perifoveal telangiectasia) is a bilateral disease that affects both sexes, starting in the 5th to 7th decades.
