Atlas of Ophthalmology

Symmetric focal nerve fiber defect with corresponding visual field defects of unknown etiology (fundus photo, w-w-perimetry, OCT, MRI, DTI)

Brain and Optical Pathway
The reduced retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in the upper retinal area corresponds to the lower visual field defect. But the spatial-temporal contrast sensitivity is not impaired. Both eyes are showing a vital macropapilla. It is not clear if the subcortical low grade cerebral microangiopathy contributes to the damage of the axons. The optic radiation appears unaltered in the DTI. An axonal damage of the optic nerves of unknown origin has to be presumed.
