The disc is elevated (prominent)and the margins are blurred. There are small hemorrhages. The vessels are partially hidden and capillaries become visible. Cotton-wool spots are visible near the disc margin. Exudate is accumulating in a star shape in the macular area. Subtle circumferential retinal folds are surrounding the disc
