Oculopharyngeal Dystrophy

Oculopharyngeal Dystrophy
This bilateral disease is a variant of chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia and is associated with French-Canadian heritage. It starts in adult life with ptosis, later increasing dysphagia. Complete ophthalmoplegia may follow. They are unresponsive to edrophonium. The picture shows ptosis and total immobility of all external eye muscles (The loss of eyebrows and lashes in this patient is independant of the disease).
