Thyrotoxic Exophthalmos Graves
Patient only complaint was severe eye pain. The emergency doctors were concerned with acute orbit or cavernous sinus disease. The pain was due to conjunctival chemosis and exposure keratopathy that caused corneal ulcers. The patient had been unable to close her lids for several days. Upon the recommendation of the author, the patient had vital signs, EKG and work up for thyroid disease. The patient was found to be in thyroid storm, and she was admitted to hospital. The patient developed permanent optic nerve and corneal damage. Eventually, the patient had orbital surgeries, lid surgeries and regained some visual function.
