| Valsalva Retinopathy in a Young Male after Sneezing | |
| A 32-year-old male with no significant past medical history presented with unilateral sudden visual loss few seconds after sneezing. His visual acuity (VA) at first examination was 0.05. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy was normal. A huge premacular haemorrhage was observed during a fundus examination. After two weeks of clinical observation no significant changes were observed. We first tried Nd:YAG laser treatment but it was not succesful. Therefore a 25-G central vitrectomy was perfomed with a complete recovery of VA. Valsalva retinopathy is a preretinal hemorrhage caused by a sudden increase in intrathoracic or intraabdominal pressure against a closed glottis which cause a rupture of small capillaries with extravasation of blood below the internal limiting membrane or vitreous/subhyaloid space. Usually occurs in healthy eyes and spontaneously resolves but sometimes it may need some others treatments like Nd:YAG laser or vitrectomy | |
