Optic Neuritis, Acute Optic Neuritis
This optic disc has a normal appearance, yet the visual acuity in this eye is 20/400 and a prominent afferent pupillary defect is present. Among adults with acute optic neuritis, the optic disc is initially normal in approximately two-thirds of cases, implying that the site of pathology is the posterior portion of the nerve. Such cases are referred to as "retrobulbar optic neuritis".
